The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally lifted the ban on former Mumbai spinner Ankeet Chavan. The 35-year-old confirmed the development and told PTI that he received the mail from the Indian cricket board. Back in the 2013 IPL season, Ankeet Chavan has involved in IPL spot-fixing scandal along with pacer S Sreesanth. Both the cricketers were banned from cricket for life by the BCCI's disciplinary committee. However, on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, BCCI's acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hemang Amin informed Ankeet Chavan that his life ban had been reduced to seven years according to the BCCI ethics officer's directives and the court. Thus, the development means that his sentence ended last September itself.

Ankeet Chavan was the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai in the 2012-2013 Ranji season

Talking about S Sreesanth, the 38-year-old had made his comeback in January. He had served a seven-year ban for suspected role in IPL 2013 spot-fixing scandal. Later in March 2019, the Supreme Court of India set aside the life ban, and BCCI reduced it to seven years, which concluded last year. S Sreesanth's ban was lifted by the BCCI last year. Due to this, the pacer was able to make a comeback in domestic cricket, and he even represented Kerala in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The 38-year-old has so far featured in 27 Tests, 53 ODIs, and 10 T20Is and picked up 87, 75, and 7 wickets, respectively.

Ever since Sreesanth was permitted to play domestic cricket, Chavan was trying hard to get his ban reduced as well. He claimed that the BCCI and MCA should follow the same rules as they did in S Sreesanth's case. According to sources, the spinner had written to the MCA. However, MCA, later on, decided not to intervene.

Ankeet Chavan made his debut for Mumbai in 2008. Since then, he has played 8 first-class games picking up 53 wickets at an average of 36.43. He has also scored 571 runs at an average of 35.68 with one hundred and a half-century. The spinner was the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai in the 2012-2013 season when his team won the Ranji Trophy title for the 40th time. In the List A format, the 35-year-old has 18 scalps to his name and has also scored 254 runs. He made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians in the inaugural IPL season. Later on, he was contracted by Rajasthan Royals in 2011.
