Aakash Chopra recently stated that BCCI should force each state association to give annual contracts to their players. Chopra gave the statement keeping in mind the current economic struggle of the players.

The ongoing pandemic has badly affected domestic cricket in India. The BCCI was unable to organize the Ranji Trophy last season. Only the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy tournaments were played. It definitely impacted the players financially to some extent.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra suggested the BCCI extend the contract system for domestic players. According to him, it would give the players financial security in uncertain times like the present. Thereby, BCCI should mandate for state associations to extend the contract of 20 first-class cricketers. They should ideally have a contract amount of 5-10 lakhs so that in situations like these they can be financially stable.

Sourav Ganguly has the interest of domestic cricket in mind

Aakash Chopra has faith that Sourav Ganguly would definitely make a decision in favor of domestic cricket. Ganguly had been a captain and a cricketer for the Indian Team. In fact, he was the one leading the Indian side along with Anil Kumble when the team got contracts for the first time. Thereby he would mostly take some steps to ease the financial situation of domestic cricketers.

Even for this season, there is no surety of organization of Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments. Thereby, it is more than important now that the domestic players and the entire circuit are compensated for the losses.

Aakash Chopra further reasoned that only a handful of domestic players can play in the IPL. So out of 700-800 domestic players, only the chosen few have not faced financial difficulties. But the rest of the players definitely had it go through financial troubles.

Aakash Chopra also highlighted the fact that domestic cricketers are paid 35000 rupees for a Vijay Hazare match and 17, 500 for a Syed Mushtaq Ali match. The total earning would not add up to much even if the player has played till the finals of the tournament. So it is all the more important than ever to understand the plight of domestic cricketers of India.
