The defending champions of the ODI World Cup England are all set to start their run in the quest of defending the title, in the ODI World Cup 2023. They will play against the last edition’s finalist and runners-up New Zealand. Both teams will lock horns in the tournament opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

But in a quite disheartening and disappointing piece of news for England cricket fans, the veteran all-rounder and Test skipper Ben Stokes might miss international cricket after the end of the ODI World Cup 2023. He could undergo knee surgery just after the end of the World Cup.

"I want to be playing next summer as a genuine all-rounder." - Ben Stokes

It also makes quite sure that Stokes will have to miss the highly anticipated five-match Test series against India, in India in 2024.

"I know what's going to happen, I just don't think now is the right time to say what I'm doing," said Stokes to the journalists a day before the first of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand.

"I know what's going to happen, I just don't think now is the right time to say what I'm doing. I want to be playing next summer as a genuine all-rounder. This winter is all about playing this World Cup, and then getting this knee sorted,” he added later.

Notably, Ben Stokes recently came out of his ODI retirement to be available and play for England in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. He is also a part of England’s ODI squad in the ongoing home series against New Zealand. If the 32-year-old undergoes knee surgery after the World Cup, it will be confirmed that he will have to miss the all-important 5-match Test series against India, in India.
