The first T20I of the five-match series took place in Trinidad. West Indies won the toss and chose to bat. The Men in Maroon were off to a great start as Brandon King made a quickfire 28 off 19 balls to put the pressure on the Indian bowlers. Kyle Mayers was the first wicket to fall lbw to Yuzvendra Chahal with the score at 29-1. King followed suit in quick succession in the same over. Johnson Charles was the next man out lbw to Kuldeep Yadav.
At 67-3, the West Indies were in disarray; Nicholas Pooran came in at number 4 fresh from Major League Cricket in the USA. He smashed some big shots and took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners straightaway. The wicketkeeper batter smashed 41 off 34 balls with two fours and two sixes before he was caught by Tilak Varma off Hardik Pandya. Rovman Powell, the skipper, also helped himself to a very good score of 48 off 32 balls with three fours and three sixes.
West Indies put on a superb bowling display with Jason Holder and Obed McCoy picking up four wickets between them
He could not get to a half-century because of some very good death bowling by India. Mukesh Kumar and Arshdeep Singh bowled some amazing economical overs and did not allow the likes of Shimron Hetmyer and Jason Holder to break free. Chahal was India's best bowler as he took 2-24 in his three overs. The West Indies ended up with 149-6 in their 20 overs.
The pitch in Trinidad was not the easiest to bat on. India realised it in the second innings. Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill were like the exact opposite of how they played in the ODIs. The duo were bogged down and took too many balls to start with Kishan fell to Obed McCoy and Gill was stumped off Akeal Hossein's bowling.
Suryakumar Yadav looked good for a run a ball 21 with two fours and one six but was dismissed at the wrong time. Tilak Varma was the only batter who showed some resistance as he hit a stroke-filled 39 off 22 balls with two fours and three sixes. The West Indies choked the Indian batters with good bowling as India lost Pandya and Sanju Samson very quickly.
Axar Patel tried to get India back but he was also dismissed for 13 off 11 balls. In the end, good death bowling from the West Indies meant that India lost the match by 4 runs.
