The Super Four stages of the Asia Cup 2023 have seen some major changes. Due to predictions of rain, the location had to be shifted from Colombo to Hambantota. However, in the most recent update, the Pakistan Cricket Board has objected to playing in the new venue. Notably, the Asia Cup 2023 has been a power struggle between Asia’s two richest cricket boards. Ever since the debate on the conduct of the Asia Cup started there were differences among the two boards. India were unwilling to travel to Pakistan due to political reasons. Ultimately, a hybrid model was finalised with Pakistan and Sri Lanka co-hosting the tournament.

However, there has been constant mismanagement in the conduct of the tournament. Interruptions by rain have been the main factor behind these cases of mismanagement. The marquee clash between India and Pakistan in Kandy, Sri Lanka had to be called off due to rain. The game only saw one innings being played where India managed to score 266 before being bowled out. Secondly, the game between India and Nepal in the same venue also saw major interruptions due to rain. In the end, India were given a revised target to chase in the rain-shortened match.

‘It was just rumour’- Sri Lanka Cricket CEO, Ashley de Silva on venue change

Due to the same reason, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board decided to shift the venue for the Super Four games from Colombo. Dambulla and Hambantota were looked at as options for a possible shift. Ultimately, due to a drier climate and lesser chances of rain, Hambantota was finalised as the venue for these games. However, PCB has objected to it.

According to the latest information, the match venue will see no change. Reportedly, the shift to Hambantota was a mere rumour. “It was just rumour. We haven’t made any change in the schedule. The weather is fine in Colombo right now,” Sri Lanka Cricket CEO, Ashley de Silva, said. India and Pakistan have already qualified for the Super Four stages of the competition. While Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are favourites to qualify from Group B.
