Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has admitted that he wants to snatch the record for most sixes in international cricket from West Indies power hitter Chris Gayle. Rohit, who currently has 539 sixes, is just 14 maximums behind Gayle, who sent 553 deliveries over the boundary rope. For the 'Hitman', in his prime, the required number of sixes can be achieved in just one or two matches, however, the veteran opener is likely to rewrite the record during this ongoing Asia Cup.

Among active cricketers, Rohit Sharma has hit the most number of sixes in international cricket, smashed in 446 matches across formats. Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi (476 sixes in 524 matches) is third, while former India captain MS Dhoni is the only Indian in the list of six-hitters with 359 sixes in 538 matches.

In a candid interview with journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit said: “I want to break Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record. Never in my life, I would have imagined that I will break Chris Gayle’s record. It’s funny (flex muscles)."

The 36-year-old, who said he is not a muscle guy, recalled playing aerial shots banned by the coaches during his junior days. “I am not a muscle guy but I like to hit the bowl hard. When I started playing cricket, I was told that timing is important. Aerial shots were a big no,” said Rohit

“We were told that you can play aerial shots. Basic was to keep your head intact, keep the bat close to your body and play the bowl along the carpet. If we used to play aerial shots, coach used to throw us out from the game,” he added.

He is a genuine guy: Rohit on head coach Rahul Dravid

Meanwhile, Team India advanced to the Super Fours of the 2023 Asia Cup after their 10-wicket win over Nepal. The Men in Blue will face arch-rivals Pakistan for the second time in the tournament on September 10. Speaking ahead of the blockbuster clash, Rohit also opened up about his relationship with head coach Rahul Dravid.

“I have a huge respect for Rahul Dravid. First for the person he is and then the cricketer. Because being a good human comes first then you are a cricketer, a footballer or a doctor. He is a genuine guy," the Mumbai cricketer said.

“I didn’t get much chance to play with him but I now I have got the opportunity to work with him in the past two years. He didn’t like to have a communciation gap with any player or support staff. His simple rule is to communicate with everyone. We have an open relationship. I have enjoyed my time with Rahul bhai. He is passing his knowledge about cricket to everyone,” he added.
