Most Milan and Inter supporters will concur on one point if you get them together: the Nerazzurri have a better team. Even when the Rossoneri defeated their opponents to win the Scudetto last year, this was never in question. That was demonstrated even more in the Champions League semifinal, as Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored goals, and Hakan Calhanoglu struck the woodwork, respectively. These players could have easily been pulled out of Simone Inzaghi's starting lineup.
However, Stefano Pioli had already lost Ismael Bennacer and Rafael Leao in the first 20 minutes of the match. As time ran out and they desperately needed a goal, he turned to Divock Origi, Tommaso Pobega, and Junior Messias.
Therefore, it is no surprise that Inter has defeated their city rivals three times out of the four times they have faced off this season in Serie A, the Supercoppa Italiana, and the Champions League. Although Stefano Pioli has worked wonders with this team to win the Scudetto and get to the final four of Europe's most prestigious event, it is now crystal clear that their summer purchases did not improve an already thin squad that injuries only served to exacerbate.
Milan has eliminated Inter in each of their prior Champions League encounters
Despite all that, Inter appeared poised to run amok in this first leg when they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after only 11 minutes. However, this outcome is still within reach for the second leg, particularly if Rafael Leao returns to the lineup. Because nothing with this team can ever be taken for granted, the term "Pazza Inter" was gained for a reason, and this has to worry their supporters.
Inzaghi has always preferred to hunker down and try to hold onto a lead in the final 30 minutes, but he started doing so even before halftime in this Euro derby. That is a bad strategy to adopt when it comes down to two legs. Instead of continuing to press and giving Milan no chance going into Tuesday night, they made increasingly more defensive substitutions and tactical changes. It was detrimental because Roberto Gagliardini, the last man you wanted in those situations, had a late chance to make it 3-0.
Milan again demonstrated that their attitude is seriously flawed. They have had to come from behind numerous times this season and appear to start games with intolerable sluggishness. Pioli's team had always played their best as underdogs rather than when they were expected to shine. They are undoubtedly in that situation going into the second leg, especially because most of the audience at the matchup will be Inter fans.
Milan has eliminated Inter in each of their prior Champions League encounters. If they want to complete the hat trick, they must adopt a different strategy from what they did on Tuesday's first minute.
Here's how fans reacted:
Agent Giroud ghosting so that he won't be blamed for winning the Champions league with Chelsea and a Scudetto with Milan. poor Arsenal.
