Croatia’s Borna Coric has surprised the Tennis world as he went on to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to win Cincinnati Open. The Croatian is ranked number 29th while Stephanos is the world’s number five player. Coric won the game by 7-6 (0), and 6-2 to win the title clash. Notably, before the tournament, he started as the 152nd rank player. During the tournament, he beat five seeded players and four in the top 10, including Rafael Nadal.
On the other hand, Greece’s Tsitsipas had the opportunity to become the first man this season to win championships on all three surfaces — hard court, grass, and clay. However, he couldn’t win against Borna, who returned to competitive Tennis after a shoulder injury a few months ago. After the win, the 25-year-old couldn’t express his feeling and mentioned that he never thought that he could play like this.
“I have no words, to be honest. It’s just an unbelievable feeling,” the winner said. “I’m just gonna enjoy this.
“I thought I could play well. I was training hard, and I knew I could play good tennis, but to play this level of tennis – I was just not aware.
“I’m just super happy, obviously.”
You have proved yourself over and over again: Stefanos Tsitsipas
After the game, the world number five player praised his opponent and said that Coric has proved himself again and again. He also praised Coric’s title run at Cincinnati, which included victories over Rafael Nadal, Britain’s Cameron Norrie, and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.
“You’ve proved yourself over and over again,” Tsitsipas said.
“It was an incredible comeback from injury. You are proving that you are up there with us.”
Coric returned to the game in March this year after a shoulder injury. Talking about the newly crowned champion, he had a dream run in the tournament. His journey started with a win against Lorenzo Musetti. After this, he beat Nadal and Roberto Bautista to advance to the knockouts. In the quarterfinals and semifinals, he beat Felix Auger and Cameron Noorie respectively.
