The Lanka Premier League 2022 has been postponed immediately due to the country's current economic situation, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said on Sunday. The tournament was set to take place from August 1 through August 22, 2022.

During the continuing economic crisis, the tournament's rights holder, Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), requested that the competition be postponed. "Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to announce that the Lanka Premier League 2022, which was scheduled to be held from 1st to 21st August 2022 will be postponed, with immediate effect," read the statement.

"This decision was taken by the SLC, following a request made by the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), the Rights Holder of the tournament, which cited the current ‘economic situation,’ in the country, as not conducive to hosting the tournament," it further said.

Earlier this year, despite the severe economic and civil situation, SLC announced that the five-team competition will begin at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo before moving to the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota.

The LPL had its inaugural edition in 2020, followed by the second in 2021. Jaffna Kings (formerly Stallions) have won both tournaments, with Galle Gladiators finishing as runners-up on both occasions.

Since 2020, teams from Sri Lankan cities have competed in the Lanka Premier Competition, a professional cricket league in Sri Lanka played in the T20 format. The league was formed in 2018 by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Ravin Wickramaratne, Vice President of SLC, was appointed as tournament director in August 2020.

Sri Lanka had also secured the right to host the Asia Cup in 2022, but according to recent reports, the competition may potentially be moved to the UAE. Sri Lanka is experiencing its biggest economic and political crises since its independence in 1948.

With international assignments against Australia going smoothly and Pakistan having started, everything appeared to be on track for the Asia Cup to be held in the country, but things haven't been the same in the previous week.
