Pakistan have endured a heartbreaking year in cricket in 2022. They lost the Asia Cup 2022 final and the 20-20 World Cup final in a single year. If that was not enough, they went on to get whitewashed by the England Test team at the end of the year.
With all the controversy going around former chairman Ramiz Raja’s unceremonious exit from the Pakistan Cricket Board, the fans would have hoped that 2023 would be better. The reality however has its own course and it hasn’t been something the Pakistan cricket fans would like.
The 2nd of January brought Pakistan’s second Test match against New Zealand after the first was drawn. Even before the start of the match, criticism started to crop up on Pakistan cricket for the quality of the National Stadium Karachi’s pitch.
Fans and analysts soon pointed out the batting friendliness of the pitch and slammed Pakistan cricket for making a pitch like that, despite facing a great loss against England. New Zeland bowler Mitchell McClenaghan called the pitch ‘a road’ before the toss.
The pitch sure showed its colours as both New Zealand openers Tom Latham (71) and Devon Conway (122) came up with huge individual totals. Babar Azam led Pakistan kind of made a comeback into the game as they got to 345/9 at the end of the first day. They would have hoped to clean the last wicket quickly and start their run chase.
Things again took a turn for the worse as last batters Matt Henry and Ajaz Patel took advantage of the flat pitch and added more than 100 runs to the scoreboard. Henry in particular showed great batting and brought up a half-century in just 44 balls.
The two bowlers made a mockery of the Pakistan bowling attack as they kept on playing for the entirety of session 1 and also into session 2. Soon fans came in hoard on social media and sang praise to the New Zealand bowler. They also had few words for Pakistan bowlers.
Here's how Twitter reacted to Matt Henry's half-century against Pakistan
What a partnership! A defiant 88-run final-wicket stand between Matt Henry (56*) & Ajaz Patel (31*) gets us to lunch at 433/9. Henry's 3rd Test 50 & Patel registering his highest Test score in the process on @skysportnz & @SENZ_Radio. Scorecard | https://t.co/vssoB8z2Xa #PAKvNZ pic.twitter.com/ySmtDDLbGV

50 from Number 10 batter speaks volumes about the kind of surface for batting. Test cricket is being mocked by Pakistan by preparing these flat roads. 'This pitch isn't flat though'
