Chennai Super Kings

It has been an upside-down journey for Chennai Super Kings after 3 matches in the IPL 2020. They defeated the defending champions Mumbai Indians in the competition opener. However, the last two games showed their fragile side. MS Dhoni men lost to the Rajasthan Royals by 16 runs. However, the loss against Delhi Capitals brought a big dent to their NRR (Net Run Rate).

MS Dhoni underlined the zones they have to improve in the post-match meeting. The issue that is probably giving him a headache is their opening batting line-up. As an opener, Murali Vijay isn't giving a steady performance and is probably going to be sidelined in the next match. About their other opening batsman, Shane Watson, they still hope he is going to give big performances like last season. He already proved he can deliver in the defining moments. The last two IPL seasons are the biggest example of his great performances. A week’s break before their next match (this Friday, October 2nd, against SRH) would most likely give time for the group to discover the ideal opening pair and return stronger to the field.

Here are a couple of opening options they can choose:

1. Shane Watson and Ruturaj Gaikwad

The talent of the right-handed batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad can be known just from watching him. Despite the fact that the two games he played didn't prove well for him. However, giving him an initial space can open the shades of success for him and the team.

Ruturaj was the main run-scorer for Maharashtra in the league phase of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. When allowed to open with Watson, he can play out the anchor's job well. Simultaneously, Shane Watson would have the opportunity to destroy the rivals’ bowling attack. Their combo can be wonderful for CSK and give them the boost they need in their batting.

CSK is the team known to back their players. Their talismanic captain has settled on many courageous choices previously. Perhaps, he can take this pair as another of his brilliant choices.

2. Shane Watson and Sam Curran

Have you noticed that whatever Sam Curran touches, turns gold? CSK has used him as a special hitter, finisher, and death over bowler in their last three games. He has delivered more than anyone has expected in all their departments. Then why not use him as an opener for the next matches?

We have seen KKR opening the innings with Sunil Narine, which ended up being hit. Sam Curran has a wide scope of his shots and can exploit the powerplay overs. The batting line-up of CSK is very dull. With Curran opening the innings, attack from all corners approach could be accepted. Watson, who looks totally out of sorts, can take some time and settle himself with Curran getting under the skin of the opposite team. This could be a distinct advantage for CSK in IPL 2020.

Let us wait and watch to see how things unfold for Chennai Super Kings at IPL 2020.
