After failing to win a single medal on the first day of the Commonwealth Games 2022, India finally opened their account on Day two with Sanket Sargar bringing the first medal for the country in form of silver.
After which, India then went on an incredible run, winning six medals in all, three of those being Gold. Weightlifter Achinta Sheuli has become the latest Gold medalist winner from India.
Competing in the 73kg category, Sheuli created a Commonwealth record by lifting 170kg in clean and jerk after a 143kg lift in the snatch event. The combined total of Sheuli’s lift was 313kg.
On his way to winning gold, the junior world champion registered a final lift of 143kg in the snatch event breaking the Commonwealth Games record as well as creating a new personal best.
Achinta Sheuli Background:
Achinta Sheuli, born on 24 November 2001 came from a very poor family in Howrah, West Bengal. After his father passed away, Sheuli was forced to earn a living for his family’s survival. He began to stitch and embroider with his brother to bring some money to the family. Achinta's father who was a labourer died when Achita was very young.
Achinta Sheuli Career:
Wanting to do something different, Sheuli began weightlifting as a hobby but soon found immense satisfaction in the sport. In 2015, Sheuli joined the Army Sports Institute on the back of an outstanding performance in the selection test. After improving immensely when at Army Sports Institute, Sheuli was selected for the Indian National Camp.
For two years i.e. in 2016 and 2017, Sheuli worked with ASI and later came back to the National Camp in 2018.
