Commonwealth Games 2022: Five India Contenders To Win Medals At The Birmingham Event

The Commonwealth Games 2022 is just around the corner. Here are five competitors who are expected to medal for India.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 is just around the corner with Birmingham preparing to host the event from July 28th. India finished third in the most recent Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, with a total of 66 medals, including 26 gold, 20 silver, and 20 bronze. This time too, India can perform well. Here are five competitors who are expected to medal for India at the multi-sport competition.

The star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been on a medal-winning rampage since claiming the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He comes into the competition with a gold medal from the Kuortane Games 2022.

Chopra, who also received a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships, will attempt to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games this time. The 24-year-old recently said in an interview that he is hungry to win another gold for India.

PV Sindhu will strive for a gold this time around after having to settle for a bronze and silver in the last two Commonwealth Games. By beating He Bing Jiao in the third-place match, Sindhu went on to win a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

More recently, the 2022 Singapore Open was won by Sindhu, who defeated Chinese Asian Champion Wang Zhiyi in the final. The 27-year-old appears to be in great form and would like to get the best results this time around.

Mirabai Chanu

India would hope to get a medal from the silver medalist at the Olympics in Tokyo, Mirabai Chanu. 207 kg is the weightlifter's best effort (88kg 119kg). Stella Kingsle of Nigeria, who has only lifted 168 kg (72 kg, 96 kg) to date, maybe the reigning champion's closest competitor.

In At the women's 48kg division, Mirbai had taken home the gold in the 2018 competition. To win the medal, she had to lift 196 kg. "I know what the fans want, I will try my best to do well in the CWG. I have done a lot of work on my overall training," she said in a recent interview.

Nikhat Zareen

Nikhat Zareen, the current world champion, will be watched closely in the Commonwealth Games 2022. She is the fifth female boxer from India to win a world title. When Zareen triumphed in the 50 kg division of the World Junior Boxing Championships in 2011, she shot into popularity.

She has a good chance of taking home a medal this time. "Whenever I enter the ring, I only enter with the motive of winning. So, definitely in this Commonwealth Games, I will give my best to win gold medal for my country," Nikhat told the Quint.

Manika Batra

Manika Batra hopes to perform even better at the Birmingham Games 2022 after winning four medals, including two gold ones. She is now placed 41st in the ITTF women's singles rankings and is the top-ranked player in India in table tennis.

Batra finished the 2018 Games with medals in all four of the events she competed in, including a gold in the women's singles, a team gold in the women's team competition, a silver in the women's doubles (with Mouma Das), and a bronze in the mixed doubles.
