Having sent a strong contingent to the Commonwealth Games 2022, India are hoping to come up with a better performance this time around. The fifth day of the mega event brought in four medals for India. The medal tally now stands at 13 for the country.
Let’s look at results from Day five of the commonwealth Games.
Lawn Bowls
In what has come as a pleasant surprise to many, the Indian Lawn Bowls team won Gold in the Women’s Four category. The team comprising of Nayanmoni Saikia, Pinki, Lovely Choubey and Rupa Rani Tirkey defeated South Africa by a massive score difference of 17-10. This is India’s third Gold in this edition of the Commonwealth Games, and the only medal in the history of the sport for India.
Weightlifting
Weightlifting has been the most fruitful sport for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Vikas Thakur added another to the long list of medal winners in the Commonwealth Games 2022. In Men’s 96kg category, Thakur lifted a total of 346kg (155+191) to win Silver.
Punam Yadav was disqualified in the 76kg final whereas Usha Kumara could only finish sixth in the Women’s 87kg final.
Table Tennis
Table Tennis also brought Gold for India when the Men’s team defeated Singapore in the final. The Indian team won their final match by 3-1 against the Asian side to clinch Gold.
Badminton
In 2018 the Indian badminton team defeated Malaysia 3-1 in the final. The two met again and the score was the other way around as India were defeated by the same 3-1 margin by Malaysia.
With a loss in the final, India got Silver.
Athletics
India’s athletes Seema Punia and Navjeet Kaur Dhillon had a poor campaign as they could not win a medal in the Women’s discuss final. They finished fifth and eighth and failed to win any medals.
Murali Sreeshankar and Muhammed Anees Yahiya qualified for the long jump final. Manpreet Kaur qualified for the Women’s shot put final.
India’s first openly Gay athlete Dutee Chand failed to qualify for Semis in 100m heats.
Squash
Sunayna Kuruvilla defeated Pakistan’s Faiza Zafar 3-0 in the Women’s singles plate semifinal white Saurav Ghosal lost against Paul Coll of New Zealand by 0-3 in Men’s singles.
Aquatics
Swimmers Kushagra Rawat and Advait Page qualified for the Men's 1500m freestyle final. Srihari Nataraj with a timing of 2:00:84 finished 3rd in Men's 200m Backstroke Heat 2.
Boxing
Rohit Tokas has advanced to the quarterfinal in the men's welterweight category
Hockey
The India team lost 1-3 to the hosts England in Women's Pool A match.
