Cricket’s inclusion in global sporting events such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games has been gaining steam recently. In order to turn cricket into a global sport like football, the Governing body of International Cricket has allowed cricket to be introduced into the Commonwealth Games.
This is the second time a cricket match graces the renowned international competition. Cricket has not been a part of the Commonwealth Games since 1998 when South Africa beat Australia in the final in a 50-over format.
This time, the format has been changed to 20 overs and only the women's teams are participating. In 2018 the Governing body for international cricket submitted a bid for the inclusion of women’s cricket in the Commonwealth. In April 2021, it was announced that the format of the games would be T20I with the dates of the tournaments announced two months later.
