India batter Shreyas Iyer had a memorable debut against New Zealand and became the 15th Indian batter to score a hundred in his first Test match. The 26-year-old got to the magical three-digit score by nudging Kyle Jamieson for two runs in 92nd over. Iyer thus became the third Indian player to score a hundred on debut against New Zealand.

India lost the wickets of Ravindra Jadeja and Wriddhiman Saha early into Day 2. The Mumbai batter though remained calm and kept rotating the strike. He found an able ally in Ravi Ashwin, who contributed a handy 38 runs. Iyer took on the onus of run-scoring and helped India reach 345. He ended up scoring 113 runs and allowed the team to reach a competitive score.

It was imperative for the home team to cash in on batting first.  However, the likes of Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara got starts but failed to convert them into big scores. Iyer came into the crease with India in a tight spot. The 26-year-old played to the situation and looked confident at the crease. All-rounder Jadeja took some pressure off him by scoring freely.

That allowed Iyer some time to settle in at the crease. The 26-year-old’s memorable first Ton in his debut Test innings was lauded by one and all. Former cricketers and renowned journalists were left in awe of the tremendous amount of application shown by the batter. They were pleased to see Iyer showing his class after what he had undergone in the past few months owing to injury.
