3 Reasons why Rohit Sharma should lead India in England Test series

Team India has had a terrible run in the red-ball games recently, including a 3-0 whitewash by the hands of New Zealand and a 3-1 loss in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, for the first time over 10 years. There were serious questions over the leadership skills and place of Rohit Sharma in the team and there were rumours that he won’t be picked for the England tour, starting the new WTC cycle for the Indian team.

However, after the sweet victory in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, BCCI seems to have taken a U-turn on their decision. The sources say that he might very well be the skipper for the England tests. Here are three reasons why he could be leading the team.

Success at Champions Trophy

The whole of India was in anticipation as the team was playing the finals of the Champions Trophy straight for a third time, but the miss in the finals of 2017 and 2023 surely kept the nerves of the audience. The team and especially Rohit Sharma was under tremendous pressure in the light of recent losses in the red ball format where they were whitewashed at home and lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1.

It all did not matter when the most important of the occasions arose. The team did a phenomenal job at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where they did not just lose any game but bossed their way around with every team. Team India looked far superior than any other team at the tournament as they won the trophy and Rohit’s brilliance with the bat was the highlight in the finals, where he was awarded Player of the Match.

Lack of Captaincy choices

India has a great pool of talents in the squad, with a variety of options for every role. The team has some great top-order batters in Shubhman Gill, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant. They all have led their sides in the Indian Premier League and have a knack for leadership skills.

Although having led their IPL sides, the red ball game is an entirely different format which requires completely different skillset. Pant and Gill have relatively less experience to lead a test side whereas Rahul’s batting position keeps on changing, not providing the stability needed.

Jasprit Bumrah has been one fine choice as a leader and he proved his mettle with the match he got to lead but constant injury concerns might not make him a viable choice in the longer run of the game.

Tactical genius of Rohit Sharma

While everybody hails the cricketing knowledge and presence of mind of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, his excellence has kept the strategic strength of Rohit Sharma flying a little under radar. Whether it be the T20 World Cup of 2024 or the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma has shown how brilliant he has been in utilising his resources.

People had questioned over the number of spinners India had decided to take on both these tours but he showed how well he can read the game and then he rotated the bowlers so well that the team did not miss the services of their greatest bowler, Jasprit Bumrah in the recently concluded Champions Trophy.

Apart from his explosive and match-winning capabilities with the bat, he has stood out as a skipper and can be a part of any team just based on his captaincy skills.
