5 Indian cricketers who are playing County cricket currently

In order to hone their red-ball abilities and adjust to the demanding circumstances abroad, a number of Indian cricket players are currently competing in England's County Championship. For international test preparation, county cricket provides excellent exposure to seaming wickets, long match lengths, and top-notch opponents.

Strong performances on the English domestic circuit could increase these players' chances of arguing for a Test recall or national selection, given India's busy schedule going forward.

Here are the 5 Indian cricketers who are playing county cricket currently:

1. Tilak Varma—Hampshire

With a short-term contract with Hampshire, Tilak Varma has joined the county circuit and will play in four County Championship games in June and July. Despite being relatively new to first-class cricket, he has five hundreds—one for India A—and an average of 50.16 from 18 games.

Replacing Dewald Brevis of South Africa, Tilak made an outstanding start by hitting a century with 11 fours and 3 sixes against Essex. He is anticipated to make an impact in red-ball cricket even if BCCI regulations prohibit him from participating in the T20 Blast.

2. Ishan Kishan—Nottinghamshire

On June 22, Ishan Kishan made his Nottinghamshire County Championship debut at Trent Bridge against Yorkshire. Kishan scored an outstanding 87 runs for Notts in the opening inning. Additionally, he kept up admirably, making one catch and causing one stumping.

Following the India A tour, the wicketkeeper-batter decided to stay in England after not being selected for the senior Test team. He agreed to a short-term contract with Nottinghamshire and is scheduled to play on June 29 against Somerset. South African wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, who is presently away on international duties, is replaced by Kishan.

3. Ruturaj Gaikwad—Yorkshire

Ruturaj Gaikwad, a right-handed batsman who just joined Yorkshire, toured England with the India A team. Beginning in July, he will play in five County Championship games, including one against Surrey in Scarborough. He is also anticipated to play in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

The 28-year-old has captained the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and played for India in six ODIs and 23 T20Is. He possesses a List A average of 56.15 with 16 hundreds and an average of 41.77 with seven hundreds in first-class cricket. Gaikwad just recovered from an elbow injury that had kept him out of action throughout the IPL 2025.

4. Yuzvendra Chahal—Northamptonshire

Yuzvendra Chahal is scheduled to play in English domestic cricket for the second time. He is currently registered with the prestigious county team, Northamptonshire. The seasoned Indian leg-spinner, who made an impression in his maiden season with the team, will play in the 2025 County Championship and the coveted One-Day Cup.

Notably, he made an impressive start in List A last year, taking 19 wickets in four championship games and going 5 for 14. Chahal’s standout performance last year included a brilliant nine-wicket haul against Derbyshire.

5. Khaleel Ahmed—Essex

The newest Indian cricket player to join the county circuit is Khaleel Ahmed, who has committed to Essex for the duration of the One-Day Cup and the County Championship. Khaleel is playing county cricket for the first time. Six first-class games and eight List A games are part of his two-month contract, which ends in late September. If Essex makes it to the final, that number might rise to ten.

Khaleel will be able to be selected for the forthcoming County Championship game against Yorkshire after joining the team in York. He has claimed 56 wickets at a 27.67 average in 20 first-class matches and taken 15 wickets at an average of 31.00 in 11 ODIs for India. He most recently played for India A in a June match against the England Lions.
