Chennai Super Kings endured arguably their worst Indian Premier League (IPL) season in history in 2025. Their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured and ruled out midway and even after MS Dhoni took over the reins, he couldn’t change the team's fortunes. CSK finished in 10th place with only four wins from 14 matches in IPL 2025 and will be eager to turn things around in 2026. 1. Dwaine Pretorius

South Africa all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius is a very good utility player in the shortest format of the game. He can deliver four overs with the ball on a regular basis and also float up and down in the batting order. Pretorius has also played for CSK before and overall has experience of 269 matches in the format, having picked 248 wickets and scored 2994 runs so far in his career. CSK can target Pretorius yet again in the IPL 2026 auction.

2. Kusal Mendis

Kusal Mendis’ credentials as a T20 player have skyrocketed over the last 12 months or so. Thanks to his consistent show for Sri Lanka, he was signed as a temporary replacement by Gujarat Titans and also ended up playing the final of IPL 2025. Mendis could be a good addition for CSK in the top three. He is a good player of spin and can also take advantage of powerplay overs. 

3. Will O’Rourke

Will O’Rourke could be a good addition to the CSK squad. They desperately need an overseas fast bowler in their line-up and after not playing Nathan Ellis in the previous edition, they will be looking for his replacement and might end up releasing him. Rourke has good height and can extract extra bounce from the surface, especially at the Chepauk in Chennai. Rourke has done well in his short career so far. He tasted some IPL success last season playing for Lucknow Super Giants where he ended up picking six wickets.

4. Jason Behrendorff

Not long ago, CSK had Josh Hazlewood in their squad who picked up wickets regularly in the powerplay overs. However, they missed a bowler like him in IPL 2025 and eventually struggled in almost every game in the first six overs. Jason Behrendorff might probably solve their major issue if they add him to their squad in the IPL 2026 auction.

5. Daryl Mitchell

Daryl Mitchell has played for CSK before when the franchise spent a whopping price to secure his services. But a player like him would’ve done wonders for them in IPL 2025 as their middle-order batters struggled the entire season. With Deepak Hooda and Rahul Tripathi struggling to accumulate runs, CSK’s rate went down in the middle overs significantly. Mitchell is a perfect player for CSK in the middle overs and can turn out to be a game-changer for them in next season.
