Aakash Chopra questions CSK’s decision to retire out Devon Conway vs PBKS

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has opened up on Chennai Super Kings’ poor show in the 22nd match against Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh on Tuesday, April 8.

While PBKS posted a dominating total of 219/6 in 20 overs, thanks to Priyansh Arya’s impressive century and Shashank Singh’s unbeaten 52, CSK could score only 201 runs in 20 overs, losing the game by 18 runs.

CSK started off well in the chase, without losing a wicket in the powerplay. However, they went on to lose two quick wickets in succession right after the powerplay. Moreover, Chopra also talked about CSK’s decision to retire Devon Conway, who was playing on 69.

"Chennai became the first team to lose a match despite not losing a wicket in the powerplay. This hadn't happened this year, but this is what they have done. However, when a wicket fell, the second fell after the first. Rachin (Ravindra) got out first, and then Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad) got out," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

"Then, there was a question about Devon Conway. He retired in the end. If you are chasing 11 runs per over from the first over, you can't play at a strike rate of 150. They might have made a match of it had they retired him out earlier," he added.

Though MS Dhoni came in and scored 27 runs off 12 balls with one four and three sixes, it wasn’t enough for CSK as they were well behind the required net run rate.

"Dhoni came and hit sixes as well, but he came too late. It wasn't his fault this time. He would only come when a wicket would fall. However, the match had gone too far by then. So don't blame Dhoni, blame the others for the way they are batting," Chopra stated.
