In the first ODI against Australia, India's top batsmen, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, made poor debuts in international cricket. In the rain-affected series opener, India lost by seven wickets. Shubman Gill, who took Rohit's place as ODI captain, played his debut match.

The early dismissals of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during India's ODI series opener against Australia in Perth on Sunday, October 19, were discussed by former cricketer Aakash Chopra. Rohit left after only making eight runs off 14 balls after being assigned to bat first. In contrast, Kohli was unable to open his account after catching an eight-ball duck.

"If you walk out to play after 220 days, that too in Perth, where there is extra bounce and pace, this can happen. At times, there can be a good ball, or at times, the hands are away from the body, reminding you of the BGT. All that can happen. It's okay, there are two more matches still to go, and these guys are not going anywhere. Don't really jump to any conclusion. It's just one match; Adelaide and Sydney are still left," Chopra said in a video posted on his 'X' handle

Chopra expressed optimism that the two former captains would improve in the final two games of the three-match series. According to the cricketer-turned-commentator, someone who is riding the vehicle after a long time will find it difficult to control the vehicle without utilising the handlebars. He claimed that after they get more practice, Rohit and Kohli will be at their best.

"Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli got out early. You're wondering how this happened. Have you ridden a cycle? Once you learn how to ride a cycle, you don't forget it for the rest of your life."However, if you ride a cycle after five years, you won't be able to ride it with both your hands off the handlebars, like you used to before. You will have practice again; only then will you be confident enough," he added

With India trailing the series 0–1, all eyes will be on their senior batters to respond when the sides meet again in Adelaide on October 23.
