Following their historic victory in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), former South Africa and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star AB de Villiers sent an impassioned statement to the team and its supporters. On June 3 in Ahmedabad, Rajat Patidar's team defeated Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings (PBKS) to win their first championship.
In his first season as captain, Rajat Patidar joined a select group of captains that included Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and the late Shane Warne, all of whom guided their teams to an IPL championship.
The final that was played in Ahmedabad saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batting first and posting 190/9 in 20 overs. Virat Kohli top-scored with 43 runs. Rajat Patidar, Liam Livingstone, Mayank Agarwal, and Jitesh Sharma all scored in the 20s to propel RCB to a fighting score.
In response, while the PBKS top order of Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, and Shreyas Iyer got starts, they failed to score substantially. And though Shashank Singh made 61* with 6 sixes and even hit 4 of them in the last over to Josh Hazlewood, PBKS could only make 184/7 in 20 overs.
RCB won by 6 runs and became the IPL 2025 champions. This was also their first IPL win after 18 seasons.
Wow, it feels good to say that: AB de Villiers’ heartfelt letter to RCB fans after IPL 2025 win
After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) achieved a historic victory in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), star AB de Villiers sent a heartfelt tribute to the team and its supporters.
De Villiers posted a touching video message on Instagram on Wednesday, June 11. In the caption, the 41-year-old stated that he composed the message on June 4 while traveling to South Africa.
The letter was shown on the video, and he read it out loud while adding images.
“Dear RCB Family, last night was something words will never fully do justice to you. But I’ll try because the heart deserves to speak when it’s full. As I walked into the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the sun had already dipped below the skyline, but it felt like the red of RCB still lit up the horizon. A neutral venue, they said. But when I heard the roar, saw the jerseys, the flags, the faces painted with red and gold, I knew this was home,” De Villiers said in the video.
“Somehow, even in the West of India, it felt like we were back at the Chinnaswamy. What I witnessed was not just a cricket match but a culmination. A culmination of belief, heart breaks, near misses, miracles and an undying loyalty that no trophy until now had been able to reward. But last night, it happened. RCB, the team that became family to me, are champions of the IPL. Wow, it feels good to say that,” he added.
