While the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched its first-ever IPL title in 18 years, AB de Villiers, the former RCB batter, made a stunning revelation, stating that he was overpaid by the franchise, as revealed by the former Indian batter Abhinav Mukund.

As Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers marked their presence to celebrate with RCB players, Mukund revealed a stunning comment that AB de made, about his time with the franchise and the money spent on him.

"I was sitting next to AB de Villiers and he told me something that I don't think any legend in the IPL has said. But he genuinely meant it, he said it from a place of emotion. He said 'I was overpaid'," Mukund revealed.

"I'm overpaid, I thought I was overpaid because I feel like all of the other elements that you're talking about, right? Where you're able to buy so many other superstar players, all those match winners you're talking about. The highest amount of money that they spent on was for someone like Phil Salt or Josh Hazlewood. They didn't cross 15 (Rs 15 crore)," was what de Villiers had told Mukund, as revealed by the latter.

It’s important to note that AB was retained twice by the RCB franchise ahead of two mega auctions in 11 years time. While he was retained for INR 7.5 Crore in IPL 2014, he got INR 11 Crore in IPL 2018.

The most RCB had spent at the IPL mega auction was INR 12.5 Crore. However, they went on to retain Virat Kohli for INR 21 Crore while they had also bid for Venkatesh Iyer till INR 23.5 Crore, while he was eventually roped in by KKR for INR 23.75 Crore.

"In hindsight, they must be thinking, thank God we didn't go all the way from Venkatesh Iyer. Because their last losing bid was Venkatesh Iyer. And the next three buys were Josh Hazlewood, Jitesh Sharma and I think Phil Salt. Those were the next three buys. And they saved so much in the bank for day two when Bhuvneshwar Kumar came in," Mukund added.
