After a 25-year career, legendary leg-spinner Amit Mishra, 42, announced his retirement from professional cricket on Thursday. After being sidelined for five years following his debut, he disclosed his struggle with depression and stated his desire for an earlier comeback.
According to a press release, he stated that the decision was primarily motivated by the need to give the younger generations a chance to shine on the big stage and by the fact that they had sustained repeated injuries.
Amit Mishra stated, “My 25 years in cricket have been memorable. I am wholeheartedly grateful to the BCCI, the Haryana Cricket Association, my teammates, and support staff for their companionship during this time.” Mishra wrote, “I am also thankful to the fans who have given me their love and support. Cricket has given me countless memories. I will cherish them all.”
Prior to receiving his Test cap in 2008 against Australia at Mohali, where he celebrated with an unforgettable five-wicket haul, Mishra made his international debut in 2003 during an ODI tri-series in Bangladesh. He took 156 wickets in all formats while playing for India in 22 Test matches, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is over the years.
Mishra disappeared from the scene for around six months after he first introduced himself to the public. Since Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh were at the peak of their abilities, the space was too small for Mishra to establish a position for himself.
He had a fantastic start to his Test career and eventually made a comeback to the international circuit as Kumble was recovering from an injury. He became just the sixth Indian player to take five wickets in his debut when he took seven in his first Test match against Australia in Mohali in 2008.
As of this point, Mishra has taken 535 wickets in 152 First Class games, 252 in 152 List A games, and 285 in 259 T20 matches. In addition, he achieved a double-century in first-class cricket in December 2012, with an undefeated 202 against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy.
