Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, September 4, has revealed that he was depressed for one to one and a half years after not getting enough chances in the Indian team during his playing days.

Notably, Mishra could play 68 International games for India after making his debut in 2003. In 22 Tests, he scalped 76 wickets, while he pocketed 64 wickets from 36 ODIs, with 16 wickets from 10 T20Is.

Though Mishra made his debut in 2003 in an ODI game against Bangladesh, he had to wait for five more years to get his second international game for Team India. He asserted that despite performing well and giving everything, he wasn’t given enough chances.

"After my debut, there was a 5-year gap in my career. If it wasn't there, I could have played more matches. I made my debut in Bangladesh in a One-Day match in 2003. After that, there was a 5-year gap. I couldn't return to the Indian team in five years. I was performing and doing everything. But I have no regrets. I gave my 100 per cent whenever I got a chance. And I always proved what I was told. I focused on performing. Although I was depressed for 1-1.5 years. I was angry,” Mishra said as quoted by NDTV.

Furthermore, Mishra also revealed that he paid close attention to minute things and started talking to himself in order to bring in improvements in his career. He also added that a person who loves the game should never be depressed.

"I was a little worried. But after 1-2 years, I talked to myself. I said, I want to play cricket. I am playing cricket. And I am performing. So, how can I enhance this? What else can I add to my cricket? How can I improve my small performance? So, I started to pay attention to those things. I started talking to myself. I asked myself what improvements I have made. So, a person who loves cricket should never be depressed," he added.

Mishra's last professional game came in the IPL 2024 season for the Lucknow Super Giants franchise against the Rajasthan Royals.
