In what seems to be a big blow for New Zealand, skipper and the batting great, Kane Williamson sustained an injury in his left thumb during the recent ODI World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh. Furthermore, the x-ray reports confirmed the fracture in Williamson’s left thumb, which eventually forced him to retire hurt in the match against Bangladesh.

“Got a bit fat and colourful straightaway, just made holding the bat a little difficult,” said Williamson to Ian Bishop during the post-match presentation while speaking about his thumb injury. Earlier, Kane was out of action from cricket for a long period due to a knee injury, which he sustained while playing Gujarat Titans against Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener of the Indian Premier League 2023.

Meanwhile, Williamson also spoke about his knee injury and the recovery process to get over the same. “Secondary to the thumb, great to get through [the game], from a knee perspective," he said.

Talking about cricket, skipper Williamson played a crucial knock of 78 runs for New Zealand, hitting 8 fours and a six. His knock played a vital role in helping New Zealand to comfortably chase down the target 246 runs to win the match by 6 wickets, scoring 248 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in just 42.5 overs.

Alongside his 78-run knock, Williamson also stitched a brilliant partnership of 108 runs for the third wicket with Daryl Mitchell before he went out off the field after getting retired hut on the team’s total score of 200 runs.

Speaking of the overall action of the match, the Kiwis won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first; bowlers restricted Shakib Al Hasan’s men at the score of 245 runs, scalping their 9 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.

While chasing the target, the Blackcaps got the support of the match-defining knock of 89 runs scored by Daryl Mitchell, alongside skipper Kane Williamson. Currently, New Zealand are placed at the top spot in the points table of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023.
