Former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath has predicted the scoreline of the much-awaited Ashes 2025, which is scheduled to take place later this year. The legendary former seamer stated that Australia will whitewash England by 5-0 in the showpiece event.
McGrath, who shies away from predictions, has come out with a dashing prediction this time around, asserting that home conditions will favour Australia, thanks to their settled batting and bowling core units.
"It's very rare for me to make a prediction, isn't it? And I can't make a different one - 5-0," McGrath told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Furthermore, the former seamer added that Australian bowling depth, led by Pat Cummins, was a major reason behind his bold prediction. He further stated that it would be interesting if England managed to win a Test, given their recent track record in Australia.
"I'm very confident with our team. When you've got Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon firing in their home conditions, it's going to be pretty tough. Plus, that track record England have had, it'd be interesting to see if they can win a Test,” he added.
It’s important to note that England haven’t won a Test in Australia since the 2010-11 Ashes series when their former captain Andrew Strauss led them to a series win by 3-1. Since that series, England suffered two whitewashes in the Ashes 2006-07, 2013-14, and a 0-4 defeat in the Ashes 2017-18.
Notably, the upcoming five-match Ashes series, which is scheduled to start on November 21, will be Australia’s first-ever home assignment in the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
In the most recent Ashes, which took place in 2023 in England, the hosts managed to draw the series 2-2, but they haven’t held the urn since 2015.
