Batters win you matches. Bowlers win you tournaments. Yes, bowlers are such an important part of the game and the upcoming Asia Cup will witness some of the best in the business in the shortest format of the game. A total of eight teams will participate in the Asia Cup starting from September 9. On that note, let us have a look at 5 bowlers to watch out for in the tournament:
1. Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah was criticised a lot for playing only three Tests on the England tour. There were also talks of how India lost more Test matches when he played. While he is indeed the best bowler in the world across formats, the time has come for Bumrah to remind everyone of the fact. When it comes to the shortest form of the game, there is no alternative to Bumrah either. Asia Cup is waiting for Bumrah to unleash his wrath on other teams. Who will handle him better?
2. Shaheen Afridi
Pakistan have moved on from Babar and Rizwan and it won’t take long for them to do so with Shaheen, either. The left-arm pacer was dropped for a few T20Is in between but returned for the series against Bangladesh and also played the tri-series ahead of the Asia Cup. However, the pressure will be on Shaheen to perform to the best of his abilities in the continental event. He is a wicket-taker and the team will look up to him to strike in his opening spell.
3. Matheesha Pathirana
Matheesha Pathirana is a death overs specialist but he hasn’t yet stamped his authority at the international level against the top teams. He has picked up 30 wickets so far in 19 matches in the shortest format at an economy of 8.51. But the youngster has faltered at crunch moments and against big teams. Pathirana will be eyeing to step up big time in the Asia Cup for Sri Lanka and if he has a good tournament, Sri Lanka might end up defending their T20 Asia Cup title that they won in 2022.
4. Naveen-ul-Haq
Naveen-ul-Haq is back in action for Afghanistan for the first time this year. He last played for his country in December 2024 and has been away from the game due to injury since then. Naveen is again a death overs specialist for Afghanistan and will be crucial for them if they are to go all the way in the Asia Cup. He has picked up 67 wickets in 48 matches so far in the format and will be looking to add more to his tally.
5. Taskin Ahmed
Taskin Ahmed has emerged as the best fast bowler for Bangladesh over the last year or so. The man has increased his pace and even in conditions helpful for spinners, Taskin can make life difficult for the batters with his bowling. He will open the bowling for Bangladesh in the Asia Cup and his opening spell will always be the key for them.
