Team India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 has been announced, with Suryakumar Yadav named captain and Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The announcement was made by chief selector Ajit Agarkar alongside Suryakumar. However, many fans were left stunned as some players missed out on the squad.
Here are the 5 Key Indian players who missed out on the squad
1. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer’s omission from the squad has surprised fans and sparked debate. The decision came as a shock, especially considering his recent performances.
Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2024 title and then guided Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in the next season. He played a key role with the bat, scoring 351 runs in 2024 and then 604 runs in 2025. Beyond the IPL, he also impressed in domestic cricket, winning trophies, showing leadership qualities, and piling up runs across formats.
Despite this consistency and added responsibilities, Iyer has not found a place in the squad. His exclusion has left many fans stunned. He even failed to get a palce in the stand-by list.
Speaking about the omission, Agarkar explained: "With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It's just that we have to pick 15 at the moment; he'll have to wait for his chance."
2. Washington Sundar
Considering the spin-friendly pitches in Dubai and his recent form in the England Test series, Washington Sundar looked like a strong candidate for the Asia Cup squad. Many expected him to be an important member of the side.
However, the management had other plans and chose not to include him in the 15-member squad. But, added him in the stand-by players’ list. So far, he has featured in 54 T20Is, where he has taken 48 wickets with his off-spin. He has also contributed useful runs, scoring 193 in the lower order.
3. Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj was one of the standout performers for India in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He finished as the highest wicket-taker of the series with 23 wickets, as India drew the five-match Test series 2-2.
However, Siraj will not be part of India’s Asia Cup campaign. The decision appears to be linked to workload management. The pacer bowled 185.3 overs across the five Tests, which took a heavy toll on his body.
The management seems to have opted for caution. He has been given a much-deserved rest to keep him fresh for the challenges ahead like the upcoming ODI series in Australia and the home Test series against West Indies and South Africa respectively.
4. Ravi Bishnoi
This young leg-spinner is another player who missed out on selection for the Asia Cup. His recent performances have not been up to the mark, which weakened his case for a spot in the squad.
In the IPL 2025, he managed to pick up only nine wickets in 11 matches for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). With India already having strong spin options available, his dip in form made it difficult for the selectors to consider him for the tournament.
5. Yashasvi Jaiswal
Jaiswal was India’s back-up opener in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, a tournament that India went on to win. However, this time he has missed out on a place in the 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. Despite being left out of the main squad, Jaiswal has been included in the list of stand-by players.
