The upcoming Asia Cup is set to be played from September 9 in the UAE, with the opening match set to take place between Afghanistan and Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi. For the first time in history, as many as eight teams are participating in the tournament that will be played till September 28 when the final is scheduled to take place in Dubai. With only a handful of days left for the continental event to get underway, here’s all you need to know about Asia Cup 2025:

1. Why is Asia Cup 2025 being played in the T20 format?

Asia Cup initially started as an ODI tournament but since 2016, it has switched between the ODI and T20I formats, depending on whether the upcoming format of the World Cup. With the T20 World Cup set to be played in February next year, the upcoming Asia Cup will be played in the shortest form of the game.

2. Which 8 teams are participating this time and how were they decided?

India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka qualified directly for the Asia Cup. The remaining three teams were selected from the 2024 ACC Men’s Premier Cup, which is the top tier tournament for associate countries in Asia. UAE, Oman and Hong Kong were the top three teams in that tournament and hence, qualified for the Asia Cup. Nepal missed out on qualification by a whisker.

3. What is the format for Asia Cup?

The eight teams are split into two groups of four each - Group A: India, Oman, Pakistan and UAE; Group B: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka. Each team will face the other in the same group once and the top two teams from each group will make it to the Super Four round.

In the Super Four stage, each team will face the other again before the top two teams make it to the final.

4. When is India vs Pakistan match?

The much-awaited India vs Pakistan is scheduled to take place on October 14. If they make it to Super Four, they will lock horns again on October 21 and there is a possible third face-off between them in the final on September 28.
