Top Asian teams compete against one another in the renowned Asia Cup cricket competition, which highlights fierce rivalries amongst elite teams. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and other nations have participated in it since 1984. There have been many noteworthy moments during the competition.
The Asia Cup, which is organised by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), was first played in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in 1983. For its first twelve iterations, the Asia Cup cricket tournament was played in the 50-over ODI format. However, since 2016, the competition has alternated between ODIs and T20Is.
Only two Asia Cup editions have been played in the T20 format thus far, in 2016 and 2022. The ODI format has been used for all 14 of the tournament's previous iterations.
Having participated in all 16 Asia Cups to date, Sri Lanka holds the record for most appearances. India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have recorded 15 appearances each, while Afghanistan have played in the tournament four times.
With eight Asia Cup victories, Team India is the most successful nation in the competition. Sri Lanka, which has won the coveted cup five times, is in second place, and Pakistan has won the Asia Cup twice. Bangladesh can consider itself unlucky because they have made it to the Asia Cup finals three times without ever winning the trophy.
Speaking of the Asia Cup's past, the inaugural competition took place in the United Arab Emirates in 1984, with India and Sri Lanka playing each other in the championship match. The inaugural Asia Cup champions were the Men in Blue. Sri Lanka, the runners-up from the first Asia Cup, won the cup in the second edition, which took place in 1986, after defeating Pakistan.
India defeated Sri Lanka by a record-breaking 10 wickets in the final competition in 2023 to secure the trophy last time. India and Sri Lanka's domination highlights their skill as cricketing nations in the area.
