Australia names squad for West Indies T20Is

Cricket Australia (CA), on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, announced the Australia T20Is squad to face the West Indies in a five-match series in the Caribbean during July. Big names like Jake Fraser-McGurk and Marcus Stoinis were excluded, while Mitchell Owen received a maiden call-up.

Xavier Bartlett was also excluded from the Australian squad, while Cameron Green was included as a specialist batter. After Adam Zampa, Matthew Kuhnemann is expected to make his T20I debut as the team's second specialist spinner.

Another obvious indication of Australia's preparation for additional spin alternatives prior to the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka is the inclusion of Cooper Connolly and Glenn Maxwell.

Owen's outstanding performance in the Big Bash League (BBL), which included a crucial century in the championship game, left everyone in awe. In the IPL 2025, he also played for the Punjab Kings. His strong play won him a place on the national team.

Mitchell Marsh to captain Australian T20I team; Josh Hazlewood included

Only once, while playing at No. 3 against England last September, did McGurk surpass 20. He had participated in seven of Australia's previous eight Twenty20 Internationals. Since then, he has amassed 290 runs at 15.26, hitting at 136.15, in 19 Twenty20 matches, including three Twenty20 Internationals against Pakistan.

In the last game of the BBL season, he scored 95 off 46, one of two scores above 26 and one above 38. After scoring 1, 38, 0, 7, 0, and 9 during the IPL season, he was dropped by the Delhi Capitals.

To recuperate from the Test matches in the West Indies, a few of Australia's top Test players, including Travis Head, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc, will also miss this T20 series. Despite not being able to bowl, Mitchell Marsh has returned as captain for this Twenty20 series.

The only Australian three-format fast bowler who won't be rested for the series is Josh Hazlewood. While Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins take a break, Hazlewood will continue to play in the Twenty20 Internationals.
