Cricket Australia (CA) revealed in a statement on Saturday that two members of the Australian women's cricket team, who are presently competing in the 13th Women's World Cup in India, were "approached and touched inappropriately" on Thursday, October 23, 2025, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
After filing a formal complaint in response to the Australian team's security manager, Danny Simmons's allegation, the Indore Police took action and apprehended the accused Aqueel Khan, a Khajrana neighbourhood resident, on Friday night. He was caught late Thursday night after a bystander wrote down his motorbike registration number, was recognised by police as the culprit.
The event occurred the day after the Australian team won the current Women's World Cup match against the English team by six wickets at Indore's Holkar Stadium. On Saturday, they will play South Africa at the same location.
Sources claim that the incident happened at approximately eleven in the morning. The Australians were so frightened that they instantly texted Danny Simmons, their team's security officer, an emergency message with their live position.
“I was reading their message when one of the players called me, crying. She told me what had happened. We immediately dispatched a car and brought them safely to the hotel,” Simmons said.
A resident man had rescued the two cricket players by the time the team's security manager arrived on the scene. He had already called the police and noted the accused's bike's registration number. With the assistance of Rohit Pandit, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the MP Cricket Association, Simmons later reported the incident to Indore Police. On October 23, a formal complaint was filed at the city's MIG Police Station.
Political uproar has been sparked by the incident. The spectre of this upsetting incident hangs over the Australian team, which leads the points table with 11 points, as they get ready to play South Africa for a spot in the semifinals. Once hailed as the cleanest and friendliest city in India, Indore is currently under international scrutiny for a crime that has left a stain that goes well beyond any on-field loss.
