On Saturday, May 24, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 18-man squad for the England tour, starting on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. Shubman Gill has been named as the captain, while Rishabh Pant will be his deputy.
The five-match Test series will be included in the new World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Interestingly, Karun Nair, Shardul Thakur, and Sai Sudharsan also made it to the squad while Mohammed Shami wasn’t included.
At 25 years and 258 days, Gill emerged as the fifth-youngest captain to lead Team India in Tests, falling behind Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (21 years, 77 days), Sachin Tendulkar (23 years, 169 days), Kapil Dev (24 years, 48 days), and Ravi Shastri (25 years, 229 days).
This news came after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravi Ashwin announced their respective retirements in the longest format of the game. Notably, Gill is relatively new to the red-ball captaincy. Interestingly, he captained in only five first-class games, including once in the Ranji Trophy.
West Bengal batter Abhimanyu Easwaran is another notable inclusion in the squad while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh will take care of the pace bowling duties.
"We obviously discussed every option that's there. Over the last year or so, we have looked at Shubman at various times, even when we played England last year. We are hopeful we have picked the right guy. He's a terrific player and best wishes to him,” said head selector Ajit Agarkar.
