In a surprising piece of news, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering not giving any leadership role to the Indian pacer spearhead Jasprit Bumrah during the upcoming England Test series, according to reports published in the Indian Express.
The report further mentioned that Jasprit Bumrah might not be available for the whole tour, and the role will be assigned to someone who will be taking part in all five Tests of the series. Notably, the five-match Test tour is starting on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds.
According to the report, the pacer is expected to miss a few games as part of his workload management. It’s important to note that Bumrah suffered a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, missing the last innings of the fifth Test.
Moreover, he also missed the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which India went on to win successfully, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. Later, he also missed a few initial games for the Mumbai Indians.
"We want a player who will be available for all five Test matches, and he should be given the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain are fixed and play all five Tests," said a BCCI source according to the Indian Express.
Speaking about the vice-captaincy options available in the current Indian set-up, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant deem fit to take up the role. However, opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal can also be groomed to fit the deputy role.
India’s tour of England for five Tests in June and July would be the start of the new World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27 cycle. Both teams would be aiming to start off the WTC cycle on a positive note.
