2024 was not the year for the ODI format with most of the teams focussing on T20Is and Tests for obvious reasons. India ended up playing only three ODIs and lost all of them. For the first time in 45 years, the Men in Blue couldn’t win a single ODI in a year. However, A few ODI series were played in 2024 and on that note, we bring you the best ODI XI of the year 2024:
Charith Asalanka emerged as the best captain for Sri Lanka in the format and he will also lead our team of the year 2024. He scored 605 runs at an average of 50.4 and batted at number four shepherding the middle-order.
His teammates Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis are also part of this team as an opener and number three respectively. While Nissanka amassed 694 runs at an impeccable average of 63, Mendis was even better than him amassing 742 runs at an average of 53.
Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the other opener thanks to his consistency at the top of the order. Sherfane Rutherford, Liam Livingstone and Azmatullah Omarzai are part of the middle-order and all these players are aggressive. They are capable of finishing the innings on a high as well having scored 425, 286 and 417 runs respectively in 2024.
Any Indians in the XI?
Mohammad Nabi is another all-rounder in our best ODI XI of 2024 after scoring 410 runs at an average of 41 and picking 10 wickets in the format. Taskin Ahmed of Bangladesh and Haris Rauf of Pakistan form the pace bowling attack of this team with 14 and 13 scalps in 2024 in ODIs respectively.
The second spinner of the team is Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka who accounted for a staggering 26 wickets last year in the 50-over format at an average of 15.6.
