The veteran Bangladesh all-rounder and skipper, Shakib Al Hasan has decided to start a new journey in his career after a long and celebrated international career in cricket for his country. A few of the media reports learned that Shakib will take part in the upcoming 12th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh next year in January.

He is set to contest from his home constituency Magura-1 as the face of Bangladesh’s ruling political party Awami League. Shakib’s home district, Magura is 175 km from Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka.

A couple of days back, joint secretary of Awami League Bahauddin Nasim spoke about Shakib’s huge fan following and popularity in the country.

“He is a celebrity and has great popularity among the country’s youth,” said Nasim while speaking about Shakib Al Hasan.

Amidst all this, Bangladesh is also going through a few political tensions as the opposition parties, especially the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) came up with a decision to boycott the parliamentary elections as they want the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down from role and the election phase should be taken care of by a neutral and a caretaker Prime Minister.

Notably, Sheikh Hasina has been in the centre of power and active as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister for almost the last 15 years since January 2009. She has also been accused of not letting her rivals raise their voice against her government.

Coming back to Shakib Al Hasan, he will be the second renowned cricketing personality in Bangladesh after former skipper Mashrafe Mortaza. The latter was elected as a Member of Parliament in the last elections. Apart from this, the incumbent president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Shafiul Alam Chowdhury is also an elected Member of Parliament since 2009.

Talking about cricket, Shakib Al Hasan was recently in action for Bangladesh as he led the men’s cricket team in the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023; the team failed to succeed once again and got eliminated from the league stage of the tournament.
