Team India has simply been brilliant in the One Day Internationals, especially in the ICC tournaments. In the last 13 ODIs they have played in the ICC tournaments, the team has won as many as 12 games defeating every team in the world they faced with the only loss coming against Australia in the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. 

The team’s performance has been right at the top in the ongoing Champions Trophy as well and seems to be the best team of the tournament, presenting their contention to clinch another title. Batters, bowlers and all-rounders, have all been performing exceptionally well in the ongoing tournament. However, there might be 3 reasons why India might not be able to win the tournament.

Jasprit Bumrah’s unavailability

The biggest match-winner India has produced in the last decade has to be none other than the ace pacer of the Indian team, Jasprit Bumrah. With every weapon in his arsenal and, most importantly, the cricketing intelligence to utilize the right weapon at the right moment, he has been the most complete bowler you will ever find. India could win the 2024 T20 World Cup owing to a sensational performance by Bumrah in the finals.

However, due to back issues, he developed during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he has been out from international cricket and is not representing the nation in the ongoing Champions Trophy as well. Although the team has been able to manage the game with the ball so far in the two games, there have been clear instances where they were not able to pick wickets for long durations in the game. This might become a serious threat in the knockouts and hurt India.

Inability to play quality spin

The team is not travelling to Pakistan for the league matches and since they have qualified for the semis, even the semifinal would be arranged in the UAE itself. The same ground is being used for all the matches of team India there while the ground already hosted the ILT20 tournament right before the start of the Champions Trophy.

As a result, the pitch has become very slow and has started to help the spinners. The team has been reaping the fruits of the same with their spinners, however, they have not faced quality opposition of spin so far and have been able to win the games. The team has been playing spin as well as they used to at one point in time and with quality opposition, the match might tilt in any direction.

Choking with the bat in crucial games

Every batter in the team’s batting order has been on a splendid run in this format of the game, scoring runs for fun. All five batters of the team occupy the top 15 positions in the ICC ODI rankings showing their consistency and power.

However, the team has had this habit of choking in crucial matches with the bat, not giving enough runs to bowlers to defend or chase average targets. Even the T20 World Cup victory last year saw an abysmal display of batting, not scoring enough runs in the final. It was great bowling which could bring the title to the team.
