The 2025 edition of ICC Champions Trophy is less than two weeks away now as all eight teams are gearing up for a fierce contest. All the squads have been announced and teams can make unlimited changes till February. With fitness concerns over Jasprit Bumrah, India are likely to change their squad for the showpiece event.
Interestingly, the men in blue might also end up adding mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy to their line-up. He has been a late addition to the squad for the upcoming ODI series against England and many feel he should be picked in the Champions Trophy squad as well.

1. Form and confidence
India have a chance to make the most of Varun’s form and confidence at the moment. He made his comeback to the Indian team in October 2024 after a three-year exile. He has picked up at least two wickets in the last nine T20Is and has gone wicketless only once since making a comeback. This shows that the mystery spinner has form and confidence with him and the men in blue can really take advantage of the same.
2. Unknown entity
Things didn’t go to plan for Varun Chakaravarthy at the start as he picked only two wickets in his first six T20Is. But the man is back with renewed vigour now adding more variations to his kitty. India will face New Zealand in the group stage who are not great against spin. Their other opponents are Bangladesh who conceded five wickets to the spinner in the T20I series last year. Pakistan batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan faced him in T20 World Cup 2021 but none of the other batters have faced him so far.
3. Useful for pitches in Dubai
The pitches in Dubai will be tired mostly as a lot of matches have been played recently at the venue in ILT20. If there is assistance from the surface, Varun will be close to unplayable and can single-handedly win matches for India.
