Champions Trophy 2025: India vs New Zealand

New Zealand is set to clash against the hosts Pakistan in the opening game of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 in Karachi. Mitchell Santner-led side will also face Bangladesh and the title favourites India in their group-stage fixtures.

The Kiwis will look to avenge their ODI World Cup 2023 semi-final defeat against India, while the latter will be looking to overcome their shock ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka in August last year. When it comes to the contest between India and New Zealand, there is not much to differentiate the two equally matched sides in ODI cricket.

India vs New Zealand head to head record in ODIs

Both teams last faced each other in the 2023 World Cup semi-final, where India recorded a 70-run win after posting a huge total of 397 at Wankhede Stadium. Fans still remember the game for Mohammed Shami’s memorable spell of 7 wickets for 57 and for Virat Kohli’s record-breaking 50th ODI century.

It was India’s fifth win in their last five ODI encounters against New Zealand but the overall head-to-head record between the two heavyweights is not that convincing. India and New Zealand have faced each other 118 times in ODI cricket with the former leading the contest with 60 wins and 50 losses.

India and New Zealand’s head-to-head record in the ICC men’s events favor the Black Caps. India has surprisingly won just 5 of their 19 ODI meetings against New Zealand in ICC tournaments but boasts an impressive record in bilateral series.

Meanwhile, in Champions Trophy history, India and New Zealand have famously faced each other just once, in the thrilling final of the 2000 edition in Nairobi. Sourav Ganguly-led India posted a fighting total of 264 while batting first, but the Kiwis chased down the target with four wickets and just two balls remaining to lift their first-ever ICC trophy.
