England is having a tough time in white-ball cricket, especially in the ODI format. They are coming off a 0-3 defeat at the hands of India and they had struggled even during World Cup 2023. The team led by Jos Buttler hasn’t played much ODI cricket in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy. However, England was the first team to confirm the squad for the showpiece event.
Here are 3 England players who missed out on the squad
1. Sam Curran
Sam Curran was the toast of the nation when he made his debut as a teenager. But as years passed, he has lost his place in the team across all formats. Notably, he was the player of the match in the final of the T20 World Cup 2022 and also won the player of the tournament award. However, he has since vanished from the national side and one feels, is a key miss in this England squad for the Champions Trophy to be played in Pakistan.
2. Reece Topley
Brendon McCullum’s ascension as the head coach of England in white-ball formats has led to the team looking the same as the one in Tests. This has led to Reece Topley missing from the Champions Trophy squad. The left-arm seam bowler has been troubled a lot by injuries as of late and is one of the reasons to be ignored as well. But given his height and the ability to pick wickets with his variations, Topley would’ve been handy in Pakistan during the showpiece event.
3. Jacob Bethell
Jacob Bethell is one of the young players in England who is touted to be the next big thing. He impressed many on debut during the West Indies tour and also played decently on the recent tour to India. But midway through the ODI series, he got injured and ruled out of the entire Champions Trophy. The left-handed batter used to boost their batting down the order at number six and he will be missed badly in the upcoming tournament.
