Cricket Australia accepted that they had made a mistake during the trophy presentation of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar was a part of the commentary duties, but wasn't invited on the podium to hand the trophy to the Australian team.
It was former Australian captain Allan Border who handed the trophy to the Australians. Australia won the series 3-1 and retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy after a long gap of 10 years.
Sunil Gavaskar was perplexed that he wasn't called on the podium to give away the trophy and he made his disappointment very clear. A Cricket Australia spokesperson accepted that CA made an error by not having Gavaskar to give away the trophy.
"We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been asked to go on stage,” CA Spokesperson said.
“Just because I am an Indian…”: Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment while talking to Code Sports. He claimed that while Australia had won the trophy, it made no sense that he wasn't on the podium just because he was an Indian. On this, he said:
“I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India,” Gavaskar said.
“I mean, I am here on the ground. To me it should not matter that Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s fine. Just because I am an Indian (I did not present the trophy). I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border.”
Gavaskar further told ABC Sport:
"If India didn't win or draw the series I wouldn't be required," he said. "I'm not feeling sad, but I'm just feeling a little perplexed. It's the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, both of us should have been there."
