Former New Zealand pacer Danny Morrison made a funny comment on the recent controversy involving Dewald Brevis during the recent IPL 2025 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which was played in Bengaluru on May 3.
The crucial moment in CSK's 214-run chase came in the 17th over. The umpire instantly raised his finger when Lungi Ngidi hit Brevis in the pad with a knee-high full delivery.
As the fielder hit the non-striker's end straight from point, Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja, who seemed perplexed by the circumstance, kept running a single. When Brevis finally attempted to review the verdict, he was informed that the allotted 15 seconds had elapsed.
Umpires Nitin Menon and Mohit Krishnadas got into a furious altercation with Brevis and Jadeja as a result of the circumstances. Replays showed that the ball would have missed the leg stump, forcing Brevis to leave for a first-ball duck.
The ball is considered dead as soon as a hitter is declared out, per the regulations. Therefore, not only would the first run not count, but neither would the second. After running a couple, the batters got together for a discussion, and as expected, by the time Brevis decided to take a review, the time restriction had passed.
“Do you get some money?" - Danny Morrison’s funny quip at Dewald Brevis’ misfortune
Even worse, the ball was missing the stumps by a considerable amount; thus, Brevis would have survived if he had taken a review right away. The double strike turned out to be the decisive factor as RCB battled their way back into the game and ultimately won by a slim margin of two runs to maintain their unstoppable IPL 2025 run.
Danny Morrison felt that there was no point in thinking so hard for a review since CSK had both of them intact with a handful of overs to go.
"I'm going to be nutty. I was like, Why are you saving up the review? Do you cash those in? Do you get some money?. It is about awareness. There is that youthful nervousness about, like, 'I need to look up to you as my senior.' They don't see the time straightaway on the big screen, and you are so caught up emotionally caught up in that. But I just think it is a mistake," Morrison said on ESPNCricinfo after the RCB vs. CSK IPL 2025 match.
After the plea for a review was turned down, Ravindra Jadeja was observed having a heated argument with the umpires. In the end, Brevis was forced to return to the pavilion on foot.
