Former Australia cricketer David Warner was one of the most prestigious overseas players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Warner is the leading run-scorer amongst the foreign players in the IPL with over 6000 runs to his name.
The southpaw is also the fastest batter in tournament history to attain the 5000 (135 innings) and 6000 (165 innings) run totals. Warner played a significant role in the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)'s successful campaign in the 2016 season, which resulted in their first title.
Warner also concluded the season as the second top run scorer, with 848 runs from 17 innings, including a match-winning 69 (38) in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
David Warner began his IPL career in 2009 for the Delhi Capitals (then Daredevils), and he scored 163 runs in 7 matches in his first outing with one fifty. However, it was for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, for whom Warner had his most success, both as a captain and batter.
From IPL 2014-2020-21, David Warner scored more than 500 runs in a season six consecutive times. This included the 2016 season, where SRH became champions. However, things went downhill in IPL 2021 as he struggled both in India and overseas and was dropped from the SRH team.
David Warner found no buyers in IPL 2025 mega auction
He was then bought by Delhi Capitals and even captained them in IPL 2023 when Rishabh Pant was not available. Warner had good seasons for Delhi in 2022 (432 runs) and 2023 (516 runs) but poor form in the 2024 season (168 runs) followed.
With him retired from international cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup, David Warner was hoping to find a buyer in the IPL 2025 mega auction but failed to do so. Warner entered the auction with a base price of INR 2 crore but did not find any takers for his initial offer on Day 2.
The former Australia opener returned in the expedited round at the end, but no organization expressed interest in acquiring his services.
After being unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, David Warner has turned his eyes towards the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and registered for the player draft. Warner has never played in PSL, and this is the first time he has entered the player draft.
