Debut at 62! This cricketer breaks world record for being oldest international debutant

A 62-year-old cricketer has hogged the limelight of becoming the oldest-ever male debutant in international cricket. 

Making his maiden international appearance for the Falkland Islands International Cricket Team, Andrew Brownlee has created the world record for being the oldest debutant during his team's T20I fixture against Costa Rica.

While players generally retire in their mid to late 30s, making a debut at the age of over 60 is a remarkable achievement. Brownlee earned his maiden cap during his team's first-ever international game in cricket on March 11 during a T20I series against Costa Rica.

At 62 years and 145 days old, Brownlee shattered the previous record held by Turkey's Osman Goker, who made his debut at 59y and 181d during a T20I against Romania in August 2019.

Brownlee played in the opening T20I of the six-match series against Costa Rica on March 11 and featured in two more matches of the series. He could not make much of an impact with the bat as he scored only six runs in the three innings while being unbeaten twice. 

While Brownlee was the senior-most player in his team, there were three more players over the age of 56. Notably, most of the players from the Falkland Islands International Cricket Team were over 40.

All the matches were played at Los Reyes Polo Club in Guacima across three days on March 11, 12 and 13. All three days featured two games each. Falkland Islands have made their international debut with this T20I series. They have become the 106th team to be able to play the sport, highlighting the growth of the roots of this sport across the world.
