Former India captain Rohit Sharma is in an intriguing stage in his career. At 38, it is safe to say that Rohit is nearing the end of his international career as he is no longer the captain in any format. The question is whether he can play until the 2027 World Cup, which is still a few years away. Dinesh Karthik, Rohit's long-time teammate, believes the former India captain would be essential for the 2027 World Cup.

In the forthcoming ODI series against Australia later this month, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik thinks Rohit Sharma will return with a renewed appetite and much to prove.

From the heartbreak of losing to Australia in the Ahmedabad ODI World Cup final in 2023 to the triumph of leading India to the T20 World Cup in 2024, Karthik discussed Rohit's journey over the past year on Cricbuzz. He thinks the former skipper has unresolved business in the 50-over format and is still intent on earning that elusive trophy.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing Rohit Sharma the batter. When he's in form, he’s absolutely poetry in motion — especially in the powerplay, when he takes on bowlers fearlessly and sets up a solid platform for the rest of the innings. Rohit has evolved beautifully. He’s not just playing for milestones anymore — he’s setting the tone for the team. That kind of selfless intent has been refreshing to see. Even in that World Cup final, the way he batted up front showed what he brings to Indian cricket,” stated Karthik, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Karthik, however, believes that Rohit's contributions to the group go well beyond his leadership. He thinks that India may benefit greatly from having a new, focused Rohit Sharma at the top of the order, especially given his unselfish, aggressive style that has revolutionised his game in recent years.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing Rohit Sharma the batter,” Karthik said. “When he is in form, he’s absolutely poetry in motion — especially in the powerplay, when he takes on bowlers fearlessly and sets up a solid platform for the rest of the innings.”
