Former RCB batter and current mentor-cum-batting coach Dinesh Karthik lavished rich praise on pacer Yash Dayal after his amazing bowling in the last over between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 3. Dayal successfully defended 15 runs in the last over to give RCB a 2-run win.
RCB was asked to bat first after CSK’s MS Dhoni won the toss. Jacob Bethell (55) and Virat Kohli (62) added 97 runs in 10 overs for the first wicket. Devdutt Padikkal (17) and Rajat Patidar (11) tried to force runs, but it was Romario Shepherd who propelled RCB's total to 213/5 in 20 overs. He smashed 53* in 14 balls with 4 fours and 5 sixes. For CSK, Matheesha Pathirana took 3 wickets.
In response, Ayush Mhatre smashed 94 runs with 9 fours and 5 sixes and held the CSK innings together. Apart from him, Ravindra Jadeja made 77* in 45 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes. Come the last over, Dayal had to defend 15 runs and even gave a six off a no-ball.
However, he defended the runs easily, and RCB won the game by 2 runs in the end, moving to 16 points in 11 games with 8 wins. CSK remains in last place with 2 wins from 11 games.
He’s right up there with the best: Dinesh Karthik on Yash Dayal’s last over
After defending 15 runs in the last over against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, Yash Dayal celebrated by running with his arms wide while his Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammates attempted to grab him.
With his death-over heroics, the Uttar Pradesh left-arm bowler has denied CSK two points at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for the second consecutive year. Dinesh Karthik, the batting coach for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, has praised his performance.
Talking about Dayal’s effort in the last over, Karthik said, “We knew it would take a humongous effort to stop them from scoring from the runs that were left in the last over. But Yash being Yash, the way he delivered, it was outstanding. I think it was a very good team effort. Sometimes these kinds of games uplift the mood, and we’re very happy with how it transpired today.”
Karthik was particularly impressed by the work ethic displayed by Dayal.
”I think he’s right up there with some of the best that are there in India. The one thing that you see with the young crop of cricketers is how much they work hard at their cricket behind the scenes. Yash is again very diligent. He comes to bowling meetings with a paper and will write down everything and later try to implement it on the field,” explained Karthik.
In the last over, Dayal faced Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni. He trapped Dhoni in front of the wicket with two well-executed deliveries that yielded just two singles.
Shivam Dube, however, hit his height no-ball for a six off his fourth ball. To get RCB across the finish line, Dayal recovered well in the final three balls, giving up just three runs.
“Yes, the execution could be up and down with him at times. But the one thing that you get is not getting less from his effort. He always knows what to do. And when he’s able to deliver his yorkers, he feels so good about himself. And that’s one of the reasons why we retained him—because he’s got a special skill. And he’s someone who can handle pressure well. Same game, one year ago, he did it for us. And yet again today, he did a nice job for us,” Karthik stated.
With eight victories and three losses from 11 games, CB leads the points table. RCB has a foot in the playoffs with 16 points, and they will advance to the knockout stages with another victory.
