“Disappointing, but that’s cricket” - Meg Lanning reacts after losing third consecutive WPL final

Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning displayed her disappointment after her side lost the third consecutive Women’s Premier League (WPL) final by eight runs toi Mumbai Indians on Saturday, March 15.

Notably, in the first WPL final, Delhi Capitals suffered a defeat to Mumbai Indians. Later, in the second season, DC lost to RCB Women in the grand finale. Despite the franchise finishing on the top in the league stage this season, they failed to create an impact in the final.

After batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a good-looking total of 149/7 in 20 overs. Nat Sciver Brunt (30) and Harmanpreet Kaur (66) were the star batters in the first innings. Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen and Nallapureddy Charani scalped two wickets apiece.

In the chase, Delhi Capitals could score only 141/9 in 20 overs. Jemimah Rodrigues (30), Marizanne Kapp (40) and Niki Prasad (25*) couldn't take their side over the line. Nat Sciver Brunt was the star bowler, scalping a three-wicket haul while Amelia Kerr picked up two wickets.

“We have had another good season, and unfortunately, we couldn’t get over the line. Congrats to Mumbai – you have been excellent throughout the season. Chasing 150 was a pretty good target for us; one more partnership could have been enough, but I’m proud of the team," Lanning said.

“There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Performing on the night is important, and Mumbai were too good tonight. We haven’t been able to put our best performance in the final on the board, which is disappointing, but that’s cricket," she added.

“It has just not happened for us. We are bitterly disappointed; we put ourselves in a good position but couldn’t finish it off," she concluded.

Interestingly, not just in the women’s competition, Delhi Capitals are yet to bag a title in the Indian Premier League as well.
