Karun Nair had a dream run in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025 season for Vidarbha. He took the team to the final, where they unfortunately lost to Karnataka. However, Nair broke batting records during the tournament.
He was the highest run-getter of the VHT 2025 with 779 runs at an average of 389.50. Nair's performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy was nothing short of exceptional. His run fest comprised five hundreds and a half-century, and he was unbeaten in eight of his nine innings, with an average of 752 until the competition's finale.
This reignited his hopes of making a comeback to the Indian team, for whom he last played in 2017.
However, when the BCCI announced the Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Karun Nair’s name was missing from the list. Nair recently opened up on the Champions Trophy snub.
“Obviously, the possibility of an India comeback has to be on your mind. If you want to play for the country, you have to keep dreaming. There are these thoughts and dreams in the head, but that’s just motivation,” Nair was quoted by Hindustan Times.
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar was questioned by the press about why Karun Nair was not selected in the Indian squad despite an outstanding white-ball season. He recognized Nair's great performance and mentioned that his name came up during the selection discussion. However, he stated that the existing members left no room for choosing.
Notably, Nair's breakout moment in international cricket occurred in 2016, when he became only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to record three centuries in Test cricket.
"I mean, those are really special performances, and I mean someone who averages about 700+, 750+, or something, we did have a chat, no doubt about it, when those kinds of performances happen. At the moment, finding a spot in this team is very difficult. Look at the guys who have been picked. All average well above mid-40.
Unfortunately, you can't fit everyone in a squad of 15. But those performances certainly make you take notice. If there is a loss of form (for a player) or injuries, there's certainly going to be a conversation around him,” Agarkar said in the press conference.
