England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has opened up on the Indian seamer crossing the line with his celebration after taking the wicket of the English opener Ben Duckett on the second day of the ongoing Oval Test.
Duckett, who came out with an attacking game play on Day 2, went on to score 43 runs in 38 balls with five fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 113.16. However, Akash Deep constantly made the batter struggle at the crease with his perfect lines and lengths.
Eventually, in the 13th over, Akash got the better of Duckett, who tried to play the reverse scoop and edged the ball to keeper Dhruv Jurel as India bagged its first wicket. Akash celebrated with fist pumps right in Duckett’s face and then put his arm around the shoulder and had a few words with the dismissed batter as he walked off.
Trescothick, who attended the post-day press conference, asserted that Akash was lucky not to get anything in return from Duckett after that animated send-off, adding that he hasn’t seen such a celebration in his career.
"I was just saying, many in my time, a lot of players, would have just dropped the elbow on him. I don't think I've ever seen a bowler do that after getting someone out,” Trescothick said in the post-day press conference.
"You see, the bowlers have many words like we've seen a bit in this series on both sides. But it was just different wasn't it? I was just laughing and joking about it. Ben doesn't really do a great deal. Put your head down and walk off, your job is done at that point. There is no need to walk him off in that fashion,” he added.
At stumps on Day 2, India were on 75/2 in 18 overs with the second-innings lead of 52 runs. While Yashasvi Jaiswal is batting on 51 runs, Akash Deep scored four runs in two balls.
